“When I speak of Amherst I do not mean only the colleges or the literary people or scholars or gentry or any conspicuous group; I mean the region and the life in it, the life that used to be in it, the villagers and farmers, the streams and hills and old roads and forests and pastures, the abandoned grist mills and sawmills, the outlying villages like Shutesbury and Pelham with their hill-top churches and starve-crow farms. I mean of course the past, the life of two centuries, the habits and character it engendered. Though Bruce’s quote speaks to the heart of the town, Amherst is not just rooted in the past. We are a thriving community of all different types of people. We celebrate our cultural heritage of the past and are making history right now.
