The two businesses on the left side of the Lincoln Building are the Tilley Camera Shop, and Cliff Allen Clothing.

Amherst House Block in the 1920's
Amherst (Mass.)
The Amherst House Block stood at the corner of South Pleasant and Amity Streets. The Amherst House Hotel was in operation on the upper levels and a number of businesses were located on the street level. Note the Jones Library signs on the second floor. The Jones Library rented rooms here from 1921 through 1926. This building burned to the ground in December of 1926.
The two additional images present close-up views of men loitering in front of some of the businesses.

Ruins of the Palmer Block in Amherst

View of the ruins of the Palmer Block after the fire that started during the Blizzard of 1888. The Union Block and Cooper house next door were also consumed, though the chimneys of the Cooper house remained standing. Stated in the Amherst Record of March 14, 1888: "The floors and partitions were quickly burned through, making the walls serve as a huge chimney with the windows as vent-holes through which poured a perfect sea of flame."
