Description
This building stands on the site of the first meetinghouse of First Parish. From Handbook of Amherst by Frederick H. Hitchcock, 1894: The Observatory consists of an octagonal tower, 50 feet high and 17 feet in diameter, with a revolving dome and a central pedestal supporting a telescope with an aperture of 7 1/2 inches and a focal lens of 8 1/2 inches. The telescope was presented by Hon. Rufus Bullock of Boston, and cost $1800. In the transit room, 13, by 15, is a transit circle built by Gambey of Paris, the telescope having a focal length of about 3 feet and an aperture of 2 1/2 inches.
