Description
Photograph taken from in front of the Whipple House on North Pleasant Street. The Jones Library operations moved into this house two days after the disastrous fire that destroyed the Amherst House in December of 1926. (The Library had been located on the second floor of the Amherst House at the time of the fire.) The elliptical window (barely visible) on the house was incorporated into the new Jones Library building. The Jones Library sign still hangs on the front of the house. The Whipple House was razed to make room for construction of the new Fire Department building.
Seen in the background is the recently constructed Jones Library building. The cornerstone for this building was laid on October 19, 1927. It was a 900 pound slab salvaged from the Amherst House.
