This is Sue Hugus at the circulation desk of the Jones Library in 1983. Sue volunteered at the library starting in 1975, and was hired to work in the circulation department in 1980. She is now the well-known and loved librarian at Munson Memorial Library in South Amherst.

Bulb planting at Jones Library

Members of the Amherst Garden Club beautify grounds, 1977

In the spring of 1977 a subcommittee of the Amherst Garden Club created a plan for re-landscaping the Jones Library in honor of the 50th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone. The final step in the completion of the landscaping plan was the planting of bulbs around the building. Here, three members of the Club (including Janet Dakin in the middle) are planting daffodil bulbs in the section along the driveway.

Old planting removed from front of Jones Library

Jones Library before the front garden and bench

This view of the unadorned front of the Jones Library feels somewhat forlorn. The current benches and plantings were part of a re-landscaping plan created by the Amherst Garden Club in 1977. The beginning of the carrying out of the plan is visible in this photograph.

Jones Library with parking lot across the street

Jones Library in 1977

Here is the Jones Library with ladders propped along the front, possibly receiving some cosmetic repair in preparation for the 50th anniversary celebration of the laying of the cornerstone held in October of 1977. The photograph was taken from across the street, before the construction of People’s Bank. A corner of the house that stood at 10-14 South Prospect Street is visible on the left. Note the plentiful parking.
